Leur \u00e9tude r\u00e9v\u00e8le des indices sur les mouvements des plaques tectoniques et la formation des supercontinents. La fameuse mine de Kimberley en Afrique du Sud, d\u00e9couverte en 1869, est devenue c\u00e9l\u00e8bre pour ses diamants, notamment le \u00ab\u00a0Star of Africa\u00a0\u00bb. Les kimberlites, les formations rocheuses d&rsquo;o\u00f9 proviennent ces diamants, ont une origine profonde et sont rares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ces magmas remontent depuis les couches les plus anciennes et profondes de la Terre, transportant des diamants form\u00e9s sous une grande\u00a0pression\u00a0dans la\u00a0lithosph\u00e8re, parfois m\u00eame au-del\u00e0, dans la couche sub-lithosph\u00e9rique. Les recherches r\u00e9centes sugg\u00e8rent que les \u00e9ruptions de kimberlites et la formation de diamants sont \u00e9troitement li\u00e9es aux cycles des supercontinents. En effet, des \u00e9tudes montrent une corr\u00e9lation entre les p\u00e9riodes d&rsquo;activit\u00e9\u00a0des kimberlites et la fragmentation des supercontinents comme Rodinia et\u00a0Pang\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les scientifiques explorent les myst\u00e8res entourant la formation des kimberlites, notamment leur composition chimique et leur capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 percer les cratons, les c\u0153urs stables des continents. Des mod\u00e8les informatiques r\u00e9cents sugg\u00e8rent que le processus de rift continental\u00a0joue\u00a0un r\u00f4le cl\u00e9, permettant la mont\u00e9e des kimberlites vers la\u00a0surface. Ces dynamiques semblent s&rsquo;\u00e9tendre progressivement vers l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur des continents, expliquant les pics d&rsquo;activit\u00e9 des kimberlites apr\u00e8s la fragmentation des supercontinents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Par ailleurs, les diamants eux-m\u00eames offrent des indices sur la formation et l&rsquo;\u00e9volution des continents. Des \u00e9tudes de diamants form\u00e9s \u00e0 de grandes profondeurs r\u00e9v\u00e8lent des informations sur les processus de subduction et de croissance continentale. Certains diamants pourraient m\u00eame renfermer des\u00a0mat\u00e9riaux\u00a0provenant de la limite entre le manteau et le noyau terrestre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les diamants anciens et ceux provenant des profondeurs extr\u00eames pourraient \u00e9clairer des p\u00e9riodes cl\u00e9s de l&rsquo;histoire de la Terre, telles que le d\u00e9but de la subduction g\u00e9n\u00e9ralis\u00e9e ou l&rsquo;\u00e9mergence de la\u00a0vie\u00a0dans les\u00a0oc\u00e9ans.
