L&rsquo;origine de cette couche, appel\u00e9e couche E\u02b9, est rest\u00e9e incomprise pendant des d\u00e9cennies. Cependant, des chercheurs pensent d\u00e9sormais avoir identifi\u00e9 l&rsquo;origine de cette diff\u00e9renciation: l&rsquo;eau pr\u00e9sente \u00e0 la\u00a0surface\u00a0de la Terre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contrairement \u00e0 ce que l&rsquo;on pourrait penser, l&rsquo;eau ne s&rsquo;infiltre pas sur des milliers de kilom\u00e8tres \u00e0 travers un trou. Elle est transport\u00e9e par des plaques tectoniques descendantes et finit par atteindre le noyau apr\u00e8s un\u00a0voyage\u00a0de 2 900 kilom\u00e8tres. Ce processus est lent, mais au fil de milliards d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es, l&rsquo;eau de la surface a alt\u00e9r\u00e9 la limite entre le bas du manteau et le haut du noyau externe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cette couche, riche en hydrog\u00e8ne et appauvrie en silicate, mesure quelques centaines de kilom\u00e8tres d&rsquo;\u00e9paisseur, ce qui est mince compar\u00e9 au\u00a0diam\u00e8tre\u00a0du noyau externe: 6 970 kilom\u00e8tres. Selon le sc\u00e9nario d&rsquo;alt\u00e9ration par l&rsquo;eau, cette couche modifi\u00e9e de m\u00e9tal\u00a0liquide\u00a0g\u00e9n\u00e8re des cristaux de silice qui migrent dans le manteau. On s&rsquo;attend \u00e9galement \u00e0 ce que cette couche soit moins dense et pr\u00e9sente une\u00a0vitesse\u00a0sismique plus faible, des caract\u00e9ristiques mesur\u00e9es par les g\u00e9ologues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Pendant des ann\u00e9es, on a cru que les \u00e9changes de mat\u00e9riaux entre le noyau et le manteau terrestres \u00e9taient minimes. Pourtant, nos r\u00e9centes exp\u00e9riences sous haute\u00a0pression\u00a0r\u00e9v\u00e8lent une autre r\u00e9alit\u00e9.
